A widow of a man who worked at a power station is suffering with mesothelioma, and is sure that her illness is due to washing and cleaning her husband’s clothes when he worked at a power plant during the 1950s and 1960s.
Mavis Turton, 86, is suffering with the asbestos-related illness now, but would regularly shake down her husband Granville’s overalls after finishing work at a power station in Wakefield. He worked as a welder, plater, and repairman in the factory for many years, and his overalls would always be dusty when returning home from work.
Even though Mavis had no direct contact with asbestos in her line of work during those years as an office clerk and shop assistant, she has developed the asbestos-related illness in recent years, and it is thought that this is down to her exposure to asbestos dust and fibres on her husband’s overalls.
Asbestos-related illnesses such as mesothelioma and asbestosis can develop over many decades. It only takes exposure to asbestos once, with an inhalation of fibres enough to cause long-term illness. By the time it presents symptoms decades later it is often too late to treat.
